For years we've all heard about the U.S. Marine Reserve's "Toys For Tots" program. We've seen the boxes at Christmastime and even put some toys in them. It just seemed like the right thing to do. Rutherford County has always supported the program and been very generous. However, here is some shocking news. The toys collected throughout Rutherford County, up to now, was never given back to Rutherford County. That's right! The toys went other places outside of our county. The reason? There was no distributor to organize and give out the toys! Shocking as it may seem, that has ended. Thanks to Pastor James Jennings of the Redemption Faith Center and a great group of volunteers, the first annual "Toys For Tots" distributorship took place this past Saturday. It was sponsored by a willing distributor, The Redemption Faith Center. It happened at Forrest Hunt Elementary School in Forest City.
659 Rutherford County kids were registered and received gifts. This first annual event was a huge success. A profile of each child was taken and then specific toys were given to meet their desires and favorites. At 3 o'clock a.m. Saturday morning, volunteers were going to Asheville and still packaging the toys by family names and numbers. No child was to be forgotten or denied.
If you were there, I believe that the volunteers received more than the kids. The rewards of being involved in such a caring program superseded all the children's emotions of the moment. Truly there is much to the saying- "To give is to receive". The tots were receiving and the givers got back more than they gave!
Once again, isn't it great to live in Rutherford County? Merry, blessed Christmas everyone from all of us to each of you!
