Cavaliers Comeback, Panthers Legit
On the football field...
East Rutherford seemed to be on the way to a shocking loss until they scored 16 unanswered in the second half and beat Draughn on the road 16-14. A safety gave them the lead in the fourth and they held on to move to 4-4, 2-3 on the year.
Jarvis Hutchins scored a touchdown pass and Kameron Garrison, who registered nearly 100 yards on the ground punched in the other TD. Neither team could collect over 200 yards of offense, but East Rutherford won the turnover battle.
They now have to face Crest at home this coming Friday before ending the regular season with county rivals R-S Central and Chase.
The undefeated streak is over for Thomas Jefferson. The Gryphons led 14-12 at the half, but fell on the road to Community School of Davidson 26-14. CSD put up nearly 450 yards of offense and that is the most Thomas Jefferson has given up all season long.
It's not getting any easier as they go to Bessemer City this coming weekend and then they host undefeated Pine Lake Prep the following week. Thomas Jefferson has never beaten Bessemer City on the football field, but the Yellow Jackets are not as strong as they have been the past couple of seasons.
Chase will go to Kings Mountain this coming weekend after the bye. The Mountaineers are not overpowering, but their offense does have a steady run and passing game that works well. Chase has found problems scoring and Kings Mountain has scored 20 points or more in a game seven times this season.
R-S Central was downed 35-12 by Kings Mountain last week. Central threw a couple of ill-timed interceptions and a couple of breaks not go their way as the Mountaineers pulled away in the fourth quarter. The Hilltoppers will face East Burke on the road this coming Friday.
Meanwhile, Chase Boys Soccer is still undefeated and looking like a possible #1 overall seed in the 2A playoffs. However, they have four regular season matches left and they have to visit Shelby on 10-26. Coach Deshommes started the program just a short time ago and they have the wow factor this season. Defensively, they have allowed five goals this season!!! They are scoring nearly six goals every match. The Trojans have depth, a solid keeper and three guys that can score goals at any time. This is a special season no matter how the playoffs go. Then again, this is a team that believes that they can win it all. So far, they haven't done anything to disprove the theory.
As for the NFL, the Carolina Panthers (5-0, 2-0) have answered the critics in a big way. Many thought that they were the softest undefeated team still left in the NFL this season. Wrong. Carolina went to the toughest place an NFL team can play and beat a very talented Seattle team 27-23 in a comeback win.
Cam Newton calmly guided the Panthers down the field twice for touchdowns during the final 12 minutes of the game and gave the Panthers their first win in franchise history at Seattle.
Carolina rushed for 100 yards or more in now 18 straight games and come home to host Philly, Sunday. The last time the Panthers faced the Eagles, it was a 45-21 road loss last season.
